Scythes and reap hooks were used up to about 40 years ago when they were superseded by machines."Quantity of hay mown by a Good Scythesman varied from 1/2 an acre to 3/4 per day.
One acre of corn was considered a good day's work for one man.
Nettle and Dandeloin wines were brewed in those days and were accounted good thirst quenchers as well as being good for the blood.- Informant
