  2. Mumming

    The saltmill mummers wear various bright coloured silk hats shaped like a crown at the top and decorated with ribbons, neck-laces, and brooches. The sashes are made of red silk and the squashes, (which are worn around the waist) are made from the same colour silk.
    The mummers dance in to the room. The Captain first, and they form two straight rows, six men in each row. Then the Captain speaks as follows.
    "Here I am a Captain bold,
    Who leads a wondrous throng
    With sword in hand
    and heroes grand
    Sweet Saltmills we do belong"
    Then he introduces the members of his band.
