(continued from previous page)plentiful race meetings always had big fields and were very well patronised.
One little mare the property of Mr Matt Sunderland of Ballindare, less than a mile from Ballycanew, became famous and wherever the competed crowds of Ballycanew folk were there to see her winning and proud they were to be able to claim some neighbour by liking[?] for her. Eventually one ardent admirer composed a poem about her entitled "Little Nanie from Ballycanew".
The poet was a man named Murphy of Ballinvalley about 2 1/2 miles from Ballycanew. This is the poem as I got it with[out] any alteration.
I.
It was on a bright November morning
And the sun in great grandeur did rise
'Twould gladden the heart of each hero
To venture his life for the prize
II.
Oylegate was the course that was chosen
To test there great horses and men
And each one was solely determined
