    paying in full but some paid underhand even members of the Committee.
    Owing to the campaign six tenants were to be evicted, one of them being my grandfather Patrick Carty. He offered the reduced rent but it was not accepted. A man named Dunne in the adjoining farm was also evicted.
    My father who was about 5 years old at the time remembers the day well.
    A band of police and bailiffs came to take Dunne's farm first. Immediately the chapel bell rang and continued to ring from 8 o'clock to 12 o'clock to gather the people.
    There was only one right-of-way into this big farm. There were two big trees at the gate and the people soon knocked one of them. This prevented the bailiffs and the police from driving the stock off the lands. There was a local brass band which was brought in on the lands. When the band played the young horses and cattle fled back from the gates.
