- Long ago there was a smith and he wanted a bellows a anvil and a hammer. He was thinking to know what he would do when into the forge walked a big tall man. He told the smith he would give him a purse containing money to keep him working for three years and the more he would take out the more would be in it on one condition that he would go with him at the end of three years. The smith agreed and the man went his way.The smith bought the tools and began to work and he got such a lot of work to do that in a short time he had a box full of gold. The three years were coming to an end and the smith was getting very uneasy. He went to the priest and he told him his story. The priest told him it was the Devil and that he would come at the appointed time. He also told him he should do great penance. He should carry 2 sts of stones to the top of the high mountain and stay there in prayer and he should also fast.(continues on next page)
