- Travelling people visit this district often. They go from house to house begging alms. They beg for money and food or old clothes. They generally travel on foot, but some companies travel in vans. They buy little objects cheap in towns, such as pins, needles, combs, mirrors, thread, etc. and then they go around through the country selling them. Sometimes they are welcome, and other times they are not. Sometimes they lodge in houses, they sleep out in barns. Some travel alone, and others go on companies. I often heard it said that long ago a man named "Hairy Jack", used to travel around this district, because he had long hair he was called "Hairy Jack". There was another man that was called the "King of Beggars", he used to go around begging potatoes and then he would sell them. He got so rich that he called himself the "King of Beggars.
