24.5.'38The potato was the principal food of the people of Ireland long ago. The people used to eat three times a day and they used to eat the potato for their dinner with buttermilk. They used to eat their breakfast about eight o'clock but they used to get up about four
o'clock in the morning in the summer to mow. The people used to eat all oatenmeal bread. It was very hard although it was considered very good for the teeth. Tea was seldom used. Only the rich used it once a day. When tea came out first the people did not know how to make it. They used to throw away the water and eat the tea leaves. Porridge was also used for their supper and sometimes they would eat it for their breakfast.
