- After the European War an epidemic broke out throughout Ireland. This disease called the Influenza was supposed to have originated from soldiers returning from the battlefields of France. In this town alone there was an average of three deaths a week and in many houses whole families were stricken down, very few people attended the wakes for fear of themselves becoming victims of the disease.Medical doctors stated that it was the scarcity of food and stimulants that helped that havoc caused by the disease. If proper food and stimulants were obtained many of the victims would have been saved.
