    all - the fire was placed in the centre of the floor, and there was a hole in the roof, through which the smoke escaped. In some houses there were no windows, but there was a hole in the wall in which a pane of glass was placed. Half doors were, and still are very common in this district. Long ago, people used to take off half doors and dance on them. Bog-deal splinters, and rush candles were used for giving light at night. The candles were made at home. (Please see '' Old Crafts '' for description of how they were made.) Turf and sticks were used for firing. Old houses were usually built at the foot of hills, for shelter, as many be seen by ruins of old houses.
