    manure and were called boroghs.
    Many of the farmers still make the baskets and creels for their own use. Mr James Dermott of Derevahan, Swanlinbar Co. Cavan still carries on the trade.
    Thatching. Many of the houses in the district are thatched.
    Wheaten straw is considered the best material. It is cleaned and all bad short straws are taken out. Then it is left in large sheaves for the thatcher.
    Fine sally rods are pared and pointed at each end. All the knots are cut off. The rods are called scollops. The thatcher cleans down the old thatch and any holes are filled in before the new thatch is put on. He begins to thatch at the eave of the house.
    He takes a narrow bed only about 24 or 26 ins wide. He binds it well at the eave. Then he thatches on up to the top where he fastens it with the scollops also with a thatching knife he cleans down
