    was scraped off the leather was cut into squares. The finer parts-used for uppers in boots were put through other processes. The leather was very durable and was much in demand.
    Forge-work. There are 2 forges at present in the district. One owned by Mr Thomas Byrne The Diamond, Swanlinbar has been in the possession of his family for 3 generations. It is built beside the Mill-Race. The other has been lately billet on the Fair Green beside a river. Horses and donkeys are shod in the forges. Ploughs, harrows and mowing machines are in repaired., turf spades, fire cranes and crooks, tombs, pot hooks, hinges for gates, iron pans and lids are made in the forges.
