- Long ago the people in this district never wore boots until they were about eighteen or twenty years of age An old man called Naille McGovern never wore them either in Winter or Summer. Some old people only wore them going to mass or to fairs or markets. Often they carried them across their shoulders until they came near the village or town and then put them on. Clogs were worn in Winter The leather was tanned locally and the district provided wood for the clogs.Shoemakers went around to certain houses in townlands and worked there. There were five shoemakers in the district up to a few years ago and their ancestors had worked at the trade for generations before themPeople with corns go to the bogs(continues on next page)
