- We grow potatoes on our farm. We put in about an acre and a half of potatoes every year. The amount never varies. My father prepares the ground. They are sown in drills. Wooden ploughs were used long ago. There are none of them to be seen now. The spades are bought in the shops.
The ground (There are none of them ) The ground has to be ploughed, and then it has to be harrowed. Then the drills are opened with the plough. The manure is put out in small heaps through the drills and spread. Then the potatoes are dropped. The potato is cut into about four pieces. There are about three eyes left in each cut. Then the drills are closed, and after they come up they are moulded and after a time they are moulded again. About July they are sprayed. A couple of people gather up to put them in.
