The mud is deep and brown in another part of the townland beside the river is another bog and the turf are grey and heavy. There is every extreme of soil from deep black mud to blue clay and sand. Blue clay was used as a sort of cement for building and when mixed with salt and sand was used to "back a fire-place.
The people are thrifty and hard working and men have said concerning them "as cute as foxes as crafty as theives and honest as the sun".Rosaleen Johnston
