- This school is in the townland of Ardkill in the parish of Crosserlough. It was built fifty two years ago in 1886 by Rev John Boylan P.P. Crosserlough. Ardkill school was first established in 1881 in an old dwelling with an earthen floor. The dwelling had been the property of Conn Smith. He sold the farm to a relative also named Smith, and emigrated. To the dwelling thus left vacant Rev john Boylan P.P. (R.I.P.) sent Miss Mary O'Reilly (R.I.P.) as teacher (untrained and inexperienced) and established a school. Miss Mary O'Reilly taught until Dec. 31st 1925. She trained in Baggot St. Dublin 1888-1889.N.B. Up to 20 years ago, no pen handles were supplied to pupils. Each pupil made his own handle from a stem out of a hedge.-usually white-thorn or black-thorn.
