    Oaten meal was put into a crock and steeped in soft water. It was then crushed between the hands. Then a few handfuls of tails that come off oats before they are ground were mixed with it. It was then left for a few days, until it got sour. Then it was strained and the water that came off it was called "Sowens". The meal
