    graze on a gentle Cavan slope on the land of the Sone in full view of the Longford side. When she was there some time her old master's servant boy determined to take her back at all costs. So one Sunday morning he set out with a rope and a stout stick He came to the Sone and saw her feeding quietly on the other side but then the river was nearly a lake in width. Divesting himself of all his clothes but his shirt and taking the stout stick in his mouth he jumped into the river and swam across to the Cavan Side. He whistled to the mare but she fed on. A man named Blake had oats (black) oat's growing near and the boy got a handful of it and with the the cereal the mare got his arm around her neck. - With the rope he made a sort of bridle and was soon on her back. Off with mare and rider straight towards the new owner's house. Just in front of his door mare and rider cleared a high fence and cantered down the lane in to the main road. This owner took out a blunderbuss and fixed
