  1. The great famine took place in the year 1846 about ninety years.
    It was caused by the failure of the potato crop. The potatoes decayed and blackened in the ground. It is said that ever since there are black potatoes.
    This district was more thickly populated before the great famine.
    The government relief came to their aid. Anybody that planted potatoes the next year had an excellent crop.
