Local Happenings - BurningIn the year 1816a farmhouse owned by Mr John Smith of Togher parish of Killenkere, Bailieborough, went on fire while the people were at mass, it being on a Sunday in June every one was away but an old woman. She was putting on a fire with furze to boil the dinner, when she had the furze on the fireshe was coming away, and one of them caught in her apron and pulled the fire out on the middle of the floor, the fire caught thatch.The old woman ran back to save a few pounds she had in a small box, and only for a young man who came on the(continues on next page)
