- Match making was very common in this district some thirty five or forty years ago; but in recent years it is not quite as common, although there are some matches still made.
Marriages usually take place, before Lent and Advent. In olden times matches were often made a couple of days before Shrove Tuesday, and on that day often ten couples were married. The month of May was thought unlucky for a wedding, Thursday, Friday and Saturday were unlucky days. The marriage feast was often held in the bridegrooms house, and there was a wedding feast and dancing on the night of the wedding. On that night many of the local young men dressed up in straw of masks to disguise themselves and came to the bridgegroom's house, and dance and acted outside.
