- Local RuinsThe local ruins of this district are in Scattery Island. The principal ruins are - the Round Tower, St. Mary's Parish Church, St. Senan's Well & the ruins of an old castle. The Round Tower is about 115' high and the walls are 5' thick. The door is near the ground and not high up like mostof the other round towers. The eastern end of St. Mary's Parish Church is still intact with one of the Gothic shaped windows. The carving of a bishop's head supposed to be St. Senan's is over the window.St. Senan's Well is also there and people go there to perform rounds. There are also the ruins of an old castle and its vaults. The ruins of an old castle formerly belonging to the Vandeleurs are in a wood in the vicinity of Kilrush. A priest prophesied that the birds of the air would fly in and out through the ruins. One day when Mr. Vandeleur and his family were away from home, the house took fire and on their return the house was burned to the ground.Mary McMahon Donogrogue Killimer got above information from her father.
