- Long ago there was a hedge school in Derreenaseer. This school was a barn, flagged floor, and the roof was thatched with straw. The teacher lived in that district. His name was Master Browne. Every child brought a penny each to the master and that was his salary. The subjects taught were as follows:-
arithmetic, geography, history, grammar, reading, and writing. There was not much Irish spoken as the master thought that it was of no use. Logs of timber were placed around the walls as seats for the pupils. The children wrote on slates with slate pencils. The master had but a small stool to sit on. The pupils had to bring a sod of turf under each arm during the Winter. There were no black boards in the school.(continues on next page)- Collector
