    laundry to dry at the banked up culm or stone-coal fire. White clothes, collars, linen etc. are often hung on the crane at a safe distance above the fire. There are no smuts to blacken, but on the contrary, damp, white articles of clothing are bleached snow-white by the sulphur gases of the fire.
