  1. The local landlord was named Grier, in Ballyneelish, outside the village,, named Hall. Massey was the agent. These landlords were absentees. Some were good and others bad and harsh. In Giantsgrave, all the people were evicted, mostly Lyons family and Connors in Ballyneelish. Most of those evicted went to America and Australia. After the Cromwellian Settlement, Cromwell's soldiers who were bad farmers, sold out to the landlords. These farms were then divided into smaller holdings and let to the people. Farms were subdivided into 1/2 a or 1/3 a among families on marriage.
The Landlords were very harsh. They would not allow straw to be sold by the tenants: it had to be put back into the land again as manure. Punishment followed the cutting of a tree. When the head of a family died, his widow and family were evicted.
Tithes were collected by 'Tithe Procters' for the Protestant Church. Amounted to 1/3 of the crop. As money was scarce collected mostly in kind. Of the people resisted, they were imprisoned and rows were very frequent at that time.
On one occasion when a widow was being evicted locally, the Parish Priest asked the agent not to do it or he would be evicted before 12 months himself. The agent refused and before 12 mts he was dead in England. He was brought back and left in an old barn during the night before being buried in Cahir the following day.
