    During the Famine Period the people of Clerihan found a man outside the village in the ditch dying of hunger and the plague. Though the plague was highly contagious the people took him in and fed and kept him. For doing this charitable deed, the then Parish Priest Fr. Heffernan said publicly from the the altar that the parish would never have a famine or plague, and that every evil period would pass lightly over it. It has been remarked since that during all the different & difficult periods in our History, that the parish escaped all misfortunes.
