  1. (continued from previous page)
    From the star-gemmed sky
No sound but the wild wind rushing,
    Bending the creaking mast
    Bitter it smites the sailor,
    Braving ists cruel blast
No sight for the wistful watcher
    But the pallid changeless wild,
Which he prays the hidden Sun-God
To melt with his radiance mild,
    Ever and ever the snow-flakes
    Fall from the drifting cloud,
    Weaving in mystic silence
    A cold and ghostly shroud.
And ever and ever around them
    Creeps with a bolder breath
The weird shade of the north land,
To clasp them in icy death.
    But dauntless the lofty spirit
    That dwells in those pioneers,
Whose lives and deeds will be landmarks,
In the tide of coming years.
