    Secret, Universal I and Universal II. The pupils wrote with quills. They were seated on blocks of wood. The teachers remained constantly in this district. All three teachers taught indoors They taught no foreign languages and only one subject each day. The first National school in Arva was erected in 1870 but the hedge schools continued for some time after. Larry Duffy who lived in Arva taught Latin at Moyne about three miles from Arva.
