    frugal meals in the little hut which served as a school, and here he also slept in a little enclosed corner.
    One night he was awakened by a hoarse scream, and starting up he saw a mocking leering face looking at him. He started up in terror, but no one was there. A few days after the old man was found dead in a most misterious (mysterious) manner.
    Another ghost story which is told around many a fireside by old people of Killaloe. An old woman who was terribly poor lived in a little hovel by herself in Newtown which was not called by that name in those days. her little hovel was filled with rats and mice in every hole and corner. One night as she was retiring she saw a white hand draped in silk but all traces of a hand ceased from the elbow down and between the fingers of the hand was a purse. This the hand dropped into the old ladys hand. When she could at last collect her scattered senses to open the purse she found it full
