    Tulla was named among the parishes in the diocese of Killaloe in 1302.

    The present Catholic church was, according to local tradition, begun in 1832 - three years after Catholic Emancipation, but the date of completion extended some few years after that.
    The old Catholic church was then used as a Boys' and Girls' "National" School. The system of "National Education" was introduced by Lord Stanley in 1831. In 1885-'86 this building was demolished and the present Boys' School built by Very Rev. Canon Hayes, P.P. who died in 1906. The Tulla Convent School, in charge of the Sisters of Mercy, was built at the same time.
