- At one time a landlord, whose name is not known, lived above Doneraile. He was very unfair and charged unjust rents on his tenants. For this his tenants hated him and planned to kill him. About midnight one night they went to shoot him, but before he was killed he shot a finger off the only son of a poor widow. This was discovered by the soldiers next day and they arrested the man. He was tried in court and found guilty. Afterwards he was marched from Cork to the top of Searganning Hill (Doneraile) where the deed was committed and hanged. His coffin was brought before him in the march from Cork.
