My father told me that in the old days the way they used to make a hurley was this
Pick an ash butt with a turn in it then they would get a cow's horn and put it on the end of the stick. In this way they used to make a hurley.
The way they used to make a [?] slitter was they would get corks off of porter bottles and tie them together with a cord.
