- Churning was done long ago with dash-churns. They were shaped like milk cans with a lid and a hole in the middle of it, for the dash to go up and down. Dash-churns are to be found up to the present time. There is an old superstitious belief that no man should light his pipe and go off again without giving a few twists to the churn, lest he would bring away the butter.
