- Long ago the people used to exchange their goods. If one farmer had a lot of oats or potatoes and if he was very scarce in something he would exchange with his neighbouring farmer. Sometimes they used to exchange horses for cattle. As the years passed by the people began to use gold, silver, and copper for the puchase of goods instead of the system of banter. It being found more suitable to the needs of the people as a large quantity of these precious metals can be kept in a very small space compared with the storage merchandise.(continues on next page)
