There is an old forge in Stephenstown Co Kildare, owned by Mr. John Monaghan. His father Mr. Martin Monaghan worked it before him, and his great Grandfather worked it before him again, and made pikeheads in it in 1798.
When the forge was first built it consisted of a thatched roof. Then the forge went on fire and the roof was burned off. Then a galvanised roof was put on it, and the smoke rotted it, and now there is a wooden roof on it, with a layer of felt over the boards.
