    The men would carry burdins of rushes into the house and put them into big tubs and pound them with a stick. Then they would rub it between their hands (still) till all the pith would fall out. Then they would plat the rushes into ropes and there is no ropes to-day as strong. Carpinters used no nails but wooden pegs and it was a much nicer method.
