She made no answer, but disappeared immediately. The same thing happened the second night. Then Sil determined to consult the priest* and he instructed Sil how to address the apparition.
"In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Ghost, Mrs Cosgrove, what is troubling you?"
"Go into my house tomorrow and you will find a roll of tweed in the bottom drawer of the chest of drawers in the parlour. Take the roll of tweed into to Mrs Maher of Mill St.,Tullow and give it to her. It will recompense her for the few shillings I owe her. That little amount is keeping me out of Heaven".
Sil did as he was told. The only sum due by the deceased on the books was four shillings and sixpence. The matter was fully explained to Mrs Maher, who sold the tweed, squared her book and gave the balance to the poor.
Mrs Cosgrove never appeared again"
(With Tacitus, Germania, we may add the note"fama vera est" in this case. Nobody ever entertained the slightest doubt on the matter during my young days nor during the preceding generation.
