Ar an leathanach seo
- (ar lean ón leathanach roimhe)and mended ploughs, scufflers and other iron implements. They also "set" scythes.
They shod horses out in the open air in Summer and shod wheels of carts. The wheels were shod in a special spot in the garden. They had flags in a circle in the garden. They built a fire in the form of a circle round the flags and the iron tyre was reddened in it.
When the tyre was red it was fitted on the wheel and water thrown on it, to cool it. The present smith in Belcarra belongs to a family of smiths also. His father had a forge in the townland of Breaffy near Castlebar. His brother still carrys on the forge there. His father made shovels and spades for the people of the District. The present smith in Belcarra is supposed to be specially gifted in the making of horse-shoes. The instruments he sued in his forge are a sledge, small sledge, shoeing hammer, rasp, knife, for paring horses hoofs, chisel and files.
