“Before the National Schools were established in the country in the year 1834, the people had schools called scoileanna scairte nó scoileanna fóidíní.”

When Anthony Deavaney used to go fishing on the Lakes, it is said that he had only two boards one across the other and these boards carried him through the lakes. This is hardly true, but at that time the people thought that he had so much knowledge that he could go through the lakes on the boards. What was taught in these schools was, generally, reading writing and arithmetic. The pens that they wrote with, in those schools were quill pens, made from the feather of a goose.
