- (ar lean ón leathanach roimhe)A rate collector was coming to Ballina from Gorris[?] with the rates. At Bangor, a man confronted him with a rusty gun and demanded £3 to buy food. The rate collector gave it to him and told his masters when he reached Ballina. They sent out a cart of meal and flour. When it arrived the man, who had bought the provisions with the £3, was found dead as well as his wife and family. One remained and told the tale.
Rents were not paid then. When times improved, those who couldn't pay the arrears, were evicted.
During the famine men were appointed to divide the meal. They used to we it to make the required weight for the poor. Then their friends got the surplus.
