Many of the weddings did not take place till Shrove Tuesday , and sometimes three or four different parties were in the church at the same time, and they were often vieing with other to know which party would be called up first to be wed and each party anxious to be the first.
On the night before Shrove Tuesday a crowd of young boys went around to certain houses in the district , where there were boys or girls who were old enough to be married in Shrove , but were not , and on the walls of these houses, with paints of different colours they drew "stokes" images of men and women) . who were supposed to be like the men or women, whom they should have married.
On the following morning the people of the house rose early , examined the walls , and if "stokes" were drawn on them , they washed them off as quickly as possible , so that the neigh(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)
