The fire was allowed to burn out until the required amount of lime was burned. The lime was poked out from underneath and then spread on the fields. Much of the land hereabouts was reclaimed in those days and brought into cultivation by hard labour. Bogs were drained and the barren mountain side tilled to eke out existence. Unfortunately in many cases now neglect is undoing the result of so much toil and hardship. Drains are neglected and broken down, with the result that lands that once grew wheat are gradually slipping back into swamps again. On the hill sides furze and heather are invading once more the fields that were once snatched from them. We have neither the men nor inclination now for such back-breaking work as draining, blasting, grubbing or digging.Spires
These are a kind of reed that grow very plentifully in the marshy lands beside the Blackwater. They are used here for thatching and are got mostly in Ballyheeney. They are cut in September or October after the harvest and brought home and stooked. When properly saved they are as white as reed. Since the ports were neglected and broken down, it is next to impossible to cut them now as the river has swamped.(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)
