The door of the castle is the original door - studded all over and fastened inside with a huge, rude, wooden bolt. One can see where the moat has been and the drawbridge. The stone circular stairs is still in use. As a matter of fact the only thing missing from the old castle is the top storey which was blown off, not many years ago, by a tremendous storm, and wasn't rebuilt - the roof being put on again, without the top storey.It was in Kilnamanagh that St Kevin spent his novitiate, and it was while reading his "office" that "Kathleen" first saw him. She returned again and again to see him, and in the end tried to speak to him. But Kevin would have none of her and taking a handful of nettles struck her in the face telling her to be gone. Immediately Kathleen fell on her knees begging his forgiveness, and on the spot a well sprang up. This well is still known as St. Kevin's Well, though the water has been changed, through a shore, to the other side of the castle.When Cromwell was in Ireland he made Kilnamanagh Castle one of his strongholds.
