At home we have an anvil, it's weight is 6 stones, three pounds, and even recently a young man named Peter Stewart from Glentidaly carried it with one hand for some yards. The handle of it is very slippery, and not many could carry it, it is so awkward. There was also a man in my district named Henry Barker. He lived in Ray and he could lift two four-stone weights, one in each hand above his head. He also could mow an acre field of corn in a day with a hand hook.
Patrick Peoples from Crotlagh could mow an acre field of corn with a scythe from eight o'clock in the morning till three o'clock in the evening. He had no one else to [rod?] or help him. There was a five noggin bottle of whiskey to be given to the person who would do the feat, and he won the bottle of whiskey.
In years gone by ther was a man in Ray named Edward Boyle. He was the greatest mower of corn in the place. He could mow three acres and one rood in a day, from seven o'clock in the morning till six o'clock in the evening.
There were men in this district years ago who could lift very heavy weights. The most of these men are now dead, or are very old. A man in Ray named Peter Gallagher could lift four stone weights in each.
