Ruaidhrí MacSuibhne was the reigning chief. His son also named Ruaidhrí died that year and then the MacSweeney and his wife Mary O’Mally of Connaught decided to erect a monastery for Carmelites. Ruaidhrí’s wife was a very pious refined lady, outstanding for her religious and educational benefactions. The monastery was completed in 1516, and Ruaidhrí himself died in 1518 and his wife in 1522.
This monastery in Rathmullan now in ruins was one of the smaller monasteries. Originally it extended for a considerable distance in the form of a quadrangle to the West and North of the present Church. This quadrangle contained the various rooms and apartments that made up a Friary. What now remains is the Church with its chancel nave, tower and transept. The arches and windows betray a good specimen of Gothic Architecture.
Over the chancel or Eastern window is a carved figure in vestments and mitre holding in his left hand a cross close to his breast, while in the right hand in similar position the index fingers seem to be reaching for something , or perhaps it is that they are extended in the act of blessing.
The first Carmelites came here from the South of Ireland but the first Prior was himself a Connaught MacSweeney. The Founder of the monastery Ruaidhrí MacSweeney liberally endowed it(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)- Bailitheoir
