- During the Penal times from 1690-1776 the Catholics were forbidden to practise their religion. The Treaty of Limerick was made to give the Irish freedom of their religion, but it was not kept on the part of the English. Then, they made the laws known as The Penal Laws, which forbade the Irish the freedom of their religion. It was at this time that the "Mountain Mass" first started.
The priests were not allowed to say Mass in the churches, so therefore they had to go to the hills, and in this way there are a lot of places about here connected with priest and mountains Masses.
