- ChurningWe have a churn at home. It is about 3 1/2 feet high and round in shape. It is a new churn. The part that is used to dash the milk is called the dash, then there is the lid and the churn itself. We make butter once every week in summer, and once every two weeks in winter. My uncle generally does the churning and my grandfather helps him. The churning takes about an hour. We do our churning by hand and the churn-dash is always moved up and down. We usually know when the butter is made becuase it always forms on top of the milk and no little pieces come up on the dash. Boiling water is poured in in the begining to raise the temperature. When the butter is ready it is lifted out with a strainer.(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)
