Old Songs (ar lean)
“Farewell to old Ireland the land of my fathers;”
(ar lean ón leathanach roimhe)Our hearts we will warm when we think of poor Eire,
When we are in the country of sweet liberty.Old Songs
“My native place it is Moville, on the coast of Inishowen”
Song composed about a murder which occurred about a hundred years ago.Elizabeth Buchanan is my name, in Derry I am well known.
My native place it is Moville, on the coast of Inishowen.
David Buchanan married me, I was a faithful wife,
until the devil tempted me to take away his life.
For to commit this murder a hatchet I procured,
likewise a loaded pistol I secretly secured.
And with many murderous blows I struck him on the head.
His skull was broke, he never spoke,
I found he was quite dead.
As he lay dead upon the bed,
The pistol I did fire into his mouth,
And from the room I guilty did retire.
The bloody hatchet I did wash and scoured with sand [?}
And in a tub of water, I washed my bloody hands.
Since this cruel murder six long months have passed
But the avenging hands of Providence has found me out at last.
Then the judge he found me guilty
My heart got such a shock.(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)
