- (continued from previous page)go at a certain hour to the landlord's castle and ask for lodgings. If the landlord refused to keep him for one night, John was to go at midnight the next night and steal his pibiold horse which was stabled in a house outside the castle.
John went and knocked at the door of the castle. The landlord came and told him to be off as he had never lodged anybody and he was not going to lodge him.
John went back the next night and went into the stable.
There were two men in the stable who were there minding the horse. They seemed to be very sleepy so John went up to where they were and said
"I was sent by his lordship to mind the horse while you two go and have your night's rest."
"Oh how kind of him" said both simultaneously.
