One night as Staunton was sleeping a crowd of armed men came to him in search of arms. They spent several hours firing shots at him. He fired at them and is said to have wounded on of their men. They broke into the room and taking Staunton they told him they would drown him. But on the way to the lake which was only a few hundred yards away he fainted.
They threw him into a heap of bushes and made their escape.
They did not take his guns, but they left tow of their own behind them. As there were no numbers on the guns at the time thy could not be recognised. Lynch Staunton remained in the bushes until morning. He then went to his gamekeeper's house.
He would not remain in Clydagh after that but went to England where he still lives. The men, who so frightened him were never known, but they were supposed to have come from Iar-Connaught.(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)- Bailitheoir
