- There lived (three generations ago) a woman who kept one cow. She could get her supply of butter from that cow but then the butter lessened in the churning and she knew not why. She met a woman one day (her next door neighbor) and she told her of the mishap.
The other woman told her to have the churn ready for churning before sunrise on May morning. She obeyed and when her neighbor came she put a pint of milk into the churn and then began churning. The woman brought in a coulter of a plough and put it under the churn. She continued churning and there was a terrible noise and she knew not why. The churn got very heavy and it was soon filled with butter. So that is the charm for getting back butter which may be taken on May Day.- Bailitheoir
